Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile: What's the Difference? | Bath Miami

jun. 30, 2026 / Por Bath Miami / in Decoration tips

Choosing a countertop in South Florida isn't just about looks — our heat, humidity, and bright sun all play a role. The two heavyweights are quartz and granite. Here's how they compare so you can pick the right surface for your Miami kitchen or bath.

The quick answer

Quartz is an engineered stone (ground natural quartz bound with resin), while granite is 100% natural stone cut from a quarry. Both are excellent; the right choice depends on maintenance, look, and where the counter will live.

Durability and heat

Granite handles heat beautifully — you can set a hot pan on it without worry. Quartz is extremely hard and scratch-resistant, but its resin can scorch under very high heat, so a trivet is smart. For most bathrooms and vanity tops, both far outlast laminate.

Maintenance in a humid climate

This is where quartz shines in Florida. It's non-porous, so it never needs sealing and won't harbor moisture or bacteria — a real plus in our humidity. Granite is porous and should be sealed once or twice a year to resist stains. If you want low-maintenance, quartz wins; if you love natural variation, granite is worth the upkeep.

Looks

Granite offers one-of-a-kind natural patterns — no two slabs are alike. Quartz offers consistent patterns including clean whites and marble looks that are hard to get in natural stone. Browse both in our countertops collection.

Bathrooms specifically

For vanities, quartz is often the easy pick: smaller surface, no sealing, and a seamless look that pairs with any vanity. Explore options sized for vanities in our bathroom vanity tops.
