Quartz and granite are the two heavyweights of countertop materials, and both are excellent. But in Florida's humid climate, the differences between them matter more than they would up north. Here's a clear, side-by-side comparison.
If you want the lowest maintenance and a wide range of consistent colors, choose quartz. If you want one-of-a-kind natural stone and don't mind occasional resealing, choose granite. Both last for decades.
Both are extremely hard and scratch-resistant. Granite is slightly more heat-tolerant - you can set a hot pan on it briefly - which matters more in kitchens. Quartz is just as tough for daily use but can be affected by very high, direct heat, so use a trivet. For a bathroom vanity top, heat is rarely a concern, so quartz's other advantages win out.
This is the big one. Granite is porous and must be sealed regularly - typically once a year - to keep moisture and stains from soaking in. Granite gives you natural, unrepeatable patterns - no two slabs are alike. Quartz offers consistent, predictable patterns and a huge palette, including the warm, softly-veined marble looks trending in 2026. If you want a uniform look across a large counter, quartz delivers it reliably.
The two overlap heavily in price; both are mid-to-premium surfaces. Exotic granite slabs can run higher, and premium designer quartz can too. For most projects, budget won't be the deciding factor - performance and look will.
