Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile: What's the Difference? | Bath Miami

Jun 30, 2026 / By Bath Miami / in Decoration tips

Porcelain and ceramic look similar on the shelf, but they perform differently, and in a humid climate like Miami's, the difference matters. Here's a clear breakdown to help you choose.

The technical difference

Both are made from clay and fired in a kiln, but porcelain uses denser clay fired at higher temperatures. The result: porcelain is harder, less porous, and absorbs less water (under 0.5%) than standard ceramic. Browse both in our tiles collection.

Water and humidity

Because porcelain absorbs almost no water, it's the better pick for showers, floors, and anywhere moisture is constant, exactly the conditions in a Florida bathroom. Ceramic is perfectly good for walls and lighter-use areas.

Durability and cost

Porcelain is tougher and more chip-resistant, making it ideal for floors and high-traffic spaces. Ceramic is a bit softer, easier to cut, and usually more affordable, great for walls and backsplashes. A classic subway tile wall is a perfect ceramic application.

Which should you choose?

Use porcelain for shower floors, bathroom floors, and wet zones. Use ceramic for walls, backsplashes, and decorative accents where budget matters. Many beautiful bathrooms mix both.
